AAUW Las Vegas is non-partisan as an organization, but are members are very involved in getting out the vote and advocacy. All Nevada candidates who will be on the ballot this Fall were be invited and many came to introduce themselves to us at this luncheon meeting.

More details about our March program: Gwendolyn “Lou” Pascoe has devoted much of her life to public service and safety. As Director for the Southern Nevada Human Trafficking Task Force, a program of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, Lou provides leadership and administration of the Task Force to accomplish its mission to combat all forms of trafficking – sex trafficking and labor trafficking. Lou promotes a multi-disciplinary approach to achieving the mission by engaging local, state, and federal agencies and non-governmental organizations in a collaborative effort. Congressman Joe Heck sent a representative to report on the progress of Enhancing Services for Runaway and Homeless Victims for Youth Trafficking Act of 2015 (H.R. 468). On Saturday, April 11, 2015 at 11:30 am, AAUW LV teamed with League of Women Voters, Las Vegas Valley for a joint meeting at the Main Street Station. Catherine Cortez Masto has agreed to speak at the event, but cancelled on the day before the meeting. On Saturday, January 11, 2014 at 3-5 pm, AAUW Las Vegas was involved in the planning of First Ladies First at Caesar’s Palace. Newswoman Paula Francis introduced us to former First Ladies, Katherine List, Bonnie Bryan, Sandy Miller, Dema Guinn and Dawn Gibbons for a discussion about their years in the Governor’s Mansion. This event was the inaugural highlight for the Nevada Women’s Legacy Project – 150 Years of Excellence and a Nevada Statehood Celebration event.
On Saturday, February 8, 2014, 2014 at 11:30 am, we held our Monthly Meeting and Luncheon at the Main Street Station Pullman Room. Kathleen JaSook Berquist, LCSW, JD, PhD from UNLV on Human Trafficking.
On Saturday, March 8, 2014 at 11:30 am, we held our Monthly Meeting and Luncheon at the Main Street Station, Social Room. Our Women’s History Month Program featured AAUW Authors: Marlene Adrian and Mary Gafford followed by a round table discussion about project members were working on.
Saturday, April 12, 2014 at 11:30 am, our monthly luncheon meeting featured Willam S. Boyd. William S.”Bill” Boyd, the Executive Chairman and co-founder of Boyd Gaming Corporation, is one of the best-known figures in the gaming industry. Bill’s father, Sam A. Boyd, came to Las Vegas in 1941 as a dealer. Through hard work and a keen business acumen, he became a stockholder in the Sahara, the Mint, and the Union Plaza hotels in Las Vegas. Bill practiced law in Las Vegas for over 15 years and was a partner with his father and others in the Union Plaza Hotel & Casino and the Eldorado Casino in Henderson. In 1973, Bill left his legal practice and began his full-time career in the gaming industry when he and his father co-founded Boyd Gaming Corporation. Bill’s father, Sam, passed away in January, 1993. Bill served as chief executive officer of Boyd Gaming until January, 2008. Bill has been an active philanthropist and civic leader for decades. Bill Boyd provided funding for the creation of the nationally-ranked William S. Boyd School of Law at UNLV. Bill holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Nevada, Reno and a law degree from the University of Utah. He is a veteran of the United States Army, serving from 1953 to 1955. Bill’s three children are all executives with Boyd Gaming. at the Main Street Station featuring Tina Quigley, RTC Director, who presented an interesting presentation about local transit concerns and upcoming improvements. Teddie Brewer, Past President, conducted the installation of officers for the 2014-2015 year.
On Saturday, May 10, 2014 from 10 am to 4 pm, members of AAUW helped with a Beauty Fair to Benefit Children with Cancer. All proceeds were donated to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
On Saturday, May 10, 2014 from 6-9 pm, Boulder City AAUW held a Wine & Chocolate Tasting at the Boulder Dam Hotel. Proceeds benefit local scholarships.
On Saturday, September 13, 2014 at 11:30 am, we held our Monthly Meeting and Luncheon
at the Main Street Station, Pullman Room. Thirty candidate came to introduce themselves and their platform to AAUW Las Vegas members. We are now more informed voters! Peggy presented a special program on the Suffragists and shared a song she wrote about Suffrage.
On Saturday, October 11, 2014 at 11:30 am, we held our Monthly Meeting and Luncheon
at the Fremont Hotel. We heard from more candidates, including Congresswoman Dina Titus, then Lisa Lynn Chapman, from Safe Nest, informed us about her work with Nevada’s largest and most comprehensive charity devoted solely to domestic violence issues.
On Saturday, November 8, 2014 at 11:30 am, we held our Monthly Meeting and Luncheon at the Main Street Station. Pattie Stewart from Damsel in Defense taught us some personal safety tips and demonstrated innovative products designed for women.
About our November program:
1 in 5 women will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime. College-age women are 4 times more likely to be assaulted. Every 2 minutes, someone in the U.S. is sexually assaulted. One aggravated assault occurs every 35 seconds.
Pattie Stewart, from Damsel in Defense Las Vegas, teaches women and girls how to better protect ourselves from potential predators, whether we are at home, running errands around town, traveling, jogging, … or celebrating a evening downtown with the girls. Their approach is to empower, equip, and educate. Pattie will share tips and techniques we can use to prevent crimes against us as well as ways we can react when people and things threaten our safety. She’ll show us some non-lethal, innovative products that are designed for especially for women. Pattie feels that fact-based education can and does save lives. If you’ve never seen a pink stun gun, this is your chance!
On November 17 at 7:30 pm, we co-hosted 45 Years in the Desert: Nevada Women’s Long Journey to the Ballot Box at the UNLV Barrick Museum Auditorium.
We commemorated 100 years since suffragists in Nevada organized to win the vote and succeeded. Dr. Dana Bennett discussed the winning strategy and re-introduce many Nevada suffrage workers who were instrumental in the long battle to win the vote for Nevada women. University Forum NV Suffrage 111714
On Saturday, December 13, 2014 at 11:30 am, we held our Monthly Meeting and Luncheon at the Main Street Station. We held our Annual Silent Auction to Raise funds for Local Scholarships, and enjoyed entertainment by a young harpist, Ashlynn Flemming. Members shared what they want for Christmas and the Main Street Station treated us to a delicious Holiday buffet and Buche de Noel.

Saturday, January 12, 2013 11:30 am AAUW LV Monthly Luncheon at Mainstreet Station. Patti Peterson from Williams Financial Group and Jonathan Johnson from Distinctive Insurance answered questions about the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA),commonly called ‘Obamacare.’ Ms. Peterson is a financial planning expert who decided to read the act, attend seminars on it, and become well versed in it to help her clients and associates to work within this new program.
The luncheon on Saturday, February 9, 2013 at 11:30 am featured energy expert, Johnie Stoker from K2 Energy Solutions. He discussed his company’s innovative approach to energy issues and business management. We also held our AAUW Book Sale (fundraiser) and enjoyed taking new books home while helping raise funds. Krispy Kreme provided members with Valentines for themselves and friends that can be redeemed for free donuts. Thank you Krispy Kreme!
On Saturday, March 9, 2013 11:30 am, we enjoyed the monthly AAUW LV Luncheon at the Main Street Station featuring Jon Ralston, Las Vegas Sun Columnist and TV Political Commentator. We were also pleased to hear from our AAUW State Administrator, Joyce DeStefanis, who spoke about state and national issues and the upcoming conferences.
On Saturday, April 13, 2013 11:30 am, we enjoyed the monthly AAUW LV Luncheon at the Main Street Station featuring Victoria Killbury EdD, author of “Disenchanted,” the true story about a woman who was able to escape from Saudi Arabia. It chronicles her experience with discrimination against women there. The subject of the story, Nabila address the group as well and brought artifacts from Saudi Arabia.We enjoyed lunch in the Pullman Room Grille, a beautiful room in the casino. We elected next year’s AAUW LV board.

On Saturday, December 14, 2013 at 11:00 am, we held our Annual Holiday Gala Brunch and Silent Auction at the Main Street Station. We enjoyed a special holiday lunch, Silent Auction (AAUWLV Annual Fundraiser for Local Scholarships) and Socializing from 11am – Noon, followed by our speaker, Kevin Janison, our Channel 3 Weathercaster and Author who has been honored with multiple Emmy Awards for his work. We will then finish the Silent Auction and enjoy some Holiday entertainment. We raised (in bids and donations) over $1,000 for local scholarships! We thank all businesses and individuals who contributed to making this event a success.

Students and community members explored Chinese culture and cuisine, while celebrating the Chinese New Year. AAUWLV member Xirui Yan did an excellent job hosting the event. The Chinese Student & Scholar Assn. has a Facebook page and webpage link at Chinese Festival.

May 5, 2012 Funeral Services were held for AAUW Las Vegas member, Joanne West. Here is a note from her daughter, Sandy: Dear Friends of Joanne West, Our mother wanted to send a message to those who touched her life. On Sunday, April 29th Joanne went peacefully to be with the Lord. Her final days were spent in loving care of her family. We want to thank you for your loving support and friendship especially during her past two years. The phone calls, letters, emails and gifts always brought sunshine to her face! On Saturday, November 10, 2012 at 11:30 am at A Thyme for All Seasons on Warm Springs, AAUW LV enjoyed a repeat visit from nationally syndicated radio talk show host and local physician Daliah Wachs—or Dr. Daliah. With her contageous humor and good clinical knowledge, she informed us about our largest organ, our skin, as well as answered questions about other health matters. We celebrated National Healthy Skin Month with gift bags of items from Neoteric, Trace Minerals, Stevens Skin Cream, and Calmoseptine.

Thursday, November 3, 2011 Funeral Services for Laura Lippold were held at 10 a.m. at S. Joseph Husband of Mary Catholic Church, 7260 W. Sahara Avenue. Burial Services followed at Palm Memorial Park – Northwest, 6701 N. Jones Blvd. Laura was a long time member of AAUW and is best known for coordinating the Bridge Club activities and tournaments, which brought in hundreds of dollars for local scholarships. Laura, loved by everyone who knew her, will be missed. A memorial scholarship will be awarded in her name by the AAUW LV Branch in 2011. Laura Lippold
